Sport is a very important part of our ethos at St Edmund’s College and we have a “sport for all policy”. We aim to provide positive experiences for our pupils so that they enjoy playing sport at school and more importantly will endeavour to lay the foundations for a life that is healthy and active when they leave.
The PE department aims to promote and stimulate pupil interest and enjoyment in the subject and to promote health and fitness for current and future lifestyles.
St Edmund’s offers a choice of over 15 sports and a competitive fixture list in our main team sports.
Other competitive sports on offer at St Edmund’s include swimming, athletics, golf, cross-country and table tennis.
Pupils are expected to participate in the main team sports during their junior and intermediate years before progressing to a wider range of options as they enter the senior school which include fitness, aerobics, gymnastics, Irish dancing, horse riding, rowing, basketball and badminton.
As well as boasting a competitive fixture list against other schools we have a programme of inter house sport enabling all pupils to experience competitive sport on a regular basis.
In addition to our games programme we also teach practical PE from years 7-11 and the pupils are introduced to a wide range of sporting activities on a rotational basis. This curriculum is designed to primarily educate the students on the benefits of physical activity but also to offer a variety of experiences within sport.
We have excellent sports facilities at school which include extensive playing fields, a full sized all-weather pitch, a recently refurbished swimming pool, outdoor netball courts which are turned into tennis courts during the summer months. There are also two squash courts which also host the table tennis tables and a well utilised fitness suite.
The sports hall has recently been refurbished and can be used for badminton, short tennis, basketball, indoor cricket nets, gymnastics and netball.
The sports department has six dedicated specialists who are committed to delivering a full and varied curricular and co-curricular programme to ensure that all pupils are engaged in and enjoy their sport. The school also employs professionals to coach rugby and cricket.
